In today's society, it is difficult for students to cover their costs while going to university, especially when studying abroad. Student Grants is a lifeline for those students, who aim to improve their career prospects while sampling the taste of another culture. When their application is successful, it is natural that a student will want to celebrate. Some may choose to visit their family to spread the good news, or spend some well deserved time surfing online. However, most students will choose to go out to their student union bar, the hub of socialising and gaming among new friends!

There are three main areas, where students may choose to congregate and chat. The first, and most obvious area, is the student bar itself where a great variety of alcoholic (as well as alcohol-free) beverages are served to people. One great thing about student bars is that they are usually cheaply priced, so even those with a small budget can afford a couple of drinks to loosen them up. If you prefer to be seated, there are bar stools right next to the bar counter, that students can sit on. They're very comfortable, and come in a variety of sizes, shapes and colours, which help to augment the vibrant and exciting atmosphere. Bar tables may also be scattered around the union which allow you to sit round or even stand if it's really busy.

The second area where people choose to congregate is the 'chillout zone', comprised of well cushioned chairs and, usually, dim lighting. This is where students can passionately discuss their daily affairs, whether it be the latest lecture they attended, activity taking place in their student society, or even the latest film they have watched. Typically, there is a plasma/flatscreen TV mounted on a wall nearby, so whatever is screened can be used to inject a bit of life into a flagging conversation! Normally, in this area there is a bar table, where students may rest their drinks and nic-nacs in-between talking.

The third area is perfect for those who like to move around and get stuck in, with fun activities. This is called the 'games zone' where you'll typically find a pool table, a few classic game machines to spend that bit of extra cash you have, and as a bonus, some space to dance to the latest music which plays in the background. Students often love to get stuck in, with such activities as it breaks up the monotony of their day as well as engaging in some friendly competition! Some union bars even have some outside space, so you may sample a bit of fresh air and admire the beauty of the outdoors.

No matter how you'd like to spend your time at university, there is nothing like the gratification received from being able to put your duties aside, for a bit of harmless fun at the local student union bar. The drinks are inexpensive, there are endless opportunities to meet new people and, for students who are new to the area, they can learn more about their surroundings and take a piece of local tradition home with them!
